"Without so much as a parting kiss, the last pair of the giant lips that once lighted the way into downtown Chicago have left the scene." —Eric Zorn (Chicago Tribune)
In 2004, the last existing Magikist sign formerly located on the Kennedy Expressway at Montrose Avenue was torn down just two weeks shy of being named on a list of seven most-endangered local landmarks. For generations of folks who drove in from the suburbs, the Magikist lips were the sign to wake up as the excitement of downtown Chicago was drawing near. Let’s re-erect that warm welcome, wear it with respect and in the words of Wesley Willis, “rock out like a Magikist” because Chicago has arrived.
